Best Time to Visit South Africa
When the weather, wildlife and light all line up a season-by-season guide for planning luxury safaris in South Africa.
South Africa is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on what you want to see. Here is how I think about the seasons when I design tailor-made African holidays for my travellers.
May to September dry season, prime safari time
These cooler, drier months are widely considered the best window for luxury safaris in South Africa. Vegetation thins out, animals gather at waterholes, and game viewing in the Kruger and private reserves is at its peak. Days are warm and sunny, nights crisp.
October to November green shoulder season
A favourite of mine for private guided tours of South Africa: warm days, dramatic skies, newborn animals, and far fewer people. The bush is greener, so wildlife is a touch harder to spot, but the photography is extraordinary.
December to February summer in the Cape
Perfect for private tours in Cape Town, the Garden Route and the Winelands. Long beach afternoons, late sunsets, and one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. Pair the Cape with a short Kruger safari for the best of both.
March to April quiet, golden, underrated
Autumn light, smaller crowds, and excellent value. A lovely time for a slower, more reflective journey through Cape Town, the Winelands and a private safari camp.
Tell me when you can travel and I'll suggest the route that suits your dates best.
