South Africa Travel Tips for Bulgarian Travellers

Practical advice from a Bulgarian travel specialist in South Africa visas, flights, money, safety and what to pack.

As a Bulgarian travel specialist in South Africa, these are the questions I get asked most often by travellers planning their first journey from България.

Visa

Bulgarian citizens can currently enter South Africa visa-free for up to 90 days for tourism. Always check the latest rules before you fly they do change.

Flights from Sofia

The most comfortable routes are usually via Istanbul (Turkish Airlines), Doha (Qatar Airways) or Dubai (Emirates), connecting to Cape Town or Johannesburg. Total travel time is typically 14–18 hours.

Money and tipping

The currency is the South African rand (ZAR). Cards are accepted almost everywhere, but carry some cash for tips. Tipping is expected: roughly 10–15% in restaurants and a few hundred rand per day for safari guides and trackers.

Safety

South Africa is safer than reputation when you travel sensibly. On private guided tours of South Africa, your guide and pre-arranged transfers handle all of this for you.

What to pack for safari

Layers in neutral colours, a warm jacket for early mornings, a wide-brimmed hat, binoculars, a good camera, sunscreen and insect repellent. Lodges do laundry, so pack lighter than you think.

And finally language

You can travel with me entirely in Bulgarian. From the first email to the last farewell at the airport. За мен е удоволствие.
